Some nights ask for volume. Others ask for atmosphere. On Wednesday, October 21, you get both.
Valerinne return with their slow-burning instrumental intensity, while Ordinul Negru make their first appearance at Control with a ritualistic take on atmospheric black metal.
VALERINNE
Bucharest based band Valerinne came together in early 2012, when Alexandru Das (guitar/soundscapes), Liviu Stoicescu (bass) and Mircea Smarandache (drums), joined efforts in their desire to play instrumental, atmospheric, haunting, loud and emotional music. They were joined by Ciprian Florea in 2024 on guitar/synth. Valerinne’s music takes an organic approach to the post-rock genre. The compositions are ample and dramatic, almost soundtrack-like. The sound spectrum swings from dreamy and fragile to gloomy walls of noise and brutal droning sound intensity, swinging from ambiental to doom and blackgaze.
The band released its debut album, Kunstformen der Natur, in late 2012. Since then they have embarked on a European tour together with Bucharest ambient/drone band Environments, have shared the stage with Amenra, Rosetta, Environments, Atlantis, Maybeshewill, Tides from Nebula, Our Ceasing Voice, Stephen O'Malley and have played at the 2013 Dunk! Festival. At the end of 2013 the band released its second album, Arborescent, which takes the aesthetic of their first release further, yet sounds completely different. 2016 started for the band with the double release of their new album, Monumenta, and a split EP with Tauusk, Telemetry.
In 2019 Valerinne released their fourth album, Desire, and embarked on a minitour with Methadone Skies. All of Valerinne's albums have been recorded live, mixed and mastered by Marius Costache at Studio 148 in Bucharest.
ORDINUL NEGRU / Timișoara
Always a discreet presence, but with a rich musical activity for the past 20 years, during which no less than eight studio albums have been released, plus several EPs and split EPs, Ordinul Negru is perhaps one of the most inspired black metal bands that the Romanian scene can offer at the moment. The band's concept is a search for the dark essence of things, a celebration of the occult and a journey of human behaviors towards the unknown. Musically, the band blends the Black Metal inspired by the genre’s classics with the new wave of post-black with atmospheric valences.
